Now that we’re stuck at our homes for the foreseeable future this is a great opportunity to dive into a good book. If you’re like me you’re probably looking for reading recommendations. I’m working my way through a couple of different books right now and I wanted to share them with you. So without further delay, here are 5 popular summer books. If I had to pick a book I’m most excited about it’s probably The Great Alone, which happens to be the first ebook I’ve ever read! I’m usually partial to paper books or audiobooks but it’s still shocking that it took me this long to read an ebook.
I tried to mix up the recommendations so this list includes a combination of memoirs, relationship dramas, page-turners, and comedy. Of course, a couple of the books are humorous because we could all could use some laughter in our lives these days.
Where can I get books online?
- Your local library’s online access: ebooks + audiobooks
- Libby App
- Audible App
- Amazon Kindle
- Buy books on Amazon
I had the same question when my local library closed. You can’t imagine how sad I was when I found this out. Thankfully, I quickly learned that books are easy to access without leaving home. Local libraries across the country (including mine in Fort Collins, Colorado) allow cardholders to borrow e-books and audiobooks without visiting the locations. You can also try the free Libby app, which connects you to your local library.

The Great Alone by Kristen Hannah
Not only was The Great Alone a Goodreads Choice 2018 Winner it’s also been on my must-read list for ages. The story follows a troubled family in the 1970s that decides to make their homestead in the Alaskan wilderness. I was so excited to dive into this historical fiction I didn’t want to put the book down. Though I have to warn you, you might stay up all night finishing it.
Emma by Jane Austen
As you probably know from my last book review, I’m a big Jane Austen fan. I love Pride & Prejudice, Sense & Sensibility, and Emma. When I heard there was going to be a new movie version of Emma I decided to listen to the book on Audible. This fun-loving comedy has some of the best character development. In the end, I couldn’t decide which I enjoyed more, listening to the book or watching the 2020 movie.
The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls
I’ve had The Glass Castle downloaded on audible for a couple of months, but honestly, I had forgotten about it. Now that I have all this time on my hands I’ve decided to start it. From what I’ve heard from others, it’s a memoir similar to the book Educated, which was one of my favorite 2019 reads. I have high expectations for The Glass Castle. Let me know your review in the comments if you’ve had the chance to read it.
Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng
Little Fires Everywhere is all the rage right now, and for a good reason. I devoured this book in a single day. Celeste Ng created a bestselling novel about motherhood, racism, love, and the danger of perfection. Make sure you watch the show after reading the book!
Bossypants by Tina Fey
My friend, Anna, recently read Bossypants and then recommended it to me. This is one of the more lighthearted books on this list. Which isn’t a bad thing. Plus I think everyone could use some Tina Fey in their life right now. I know I could.
The Comments
Donetta Sifford
I definitely am always looking for good reading recommendations. I have read The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls. I actually have the book on my shelves.
This book quickly became one of my top 10 favorites. Her writing style mixed with her memories had me reading without a break.
I hope you enjoy it and would love to know what you think afterwards. I just discovered your site but another memoir that I have on my top 10 favorites is The Liar’s Club by Mary Karr. If you haven’t had the chance to read any of Karr’s work, I’d highly recommend her.
