I have gone through a lot of growth in this past year. A significant change has been discovering rock climbing, which has quickly become one of my biggest passions. I was introduced to climbing by a friend that suggested I join the FSU Climbing Club. Though I was hesitant at first, joining the club has been one of my best decisions yet. Not only have I made new long lasting friends, but I have also been able to go on some incredible outdoor climbing trips with the Climbing Club. We got the chance to go climbing at Rocktown in La Fayette, Georgia.
Rock Town is known for its boulder fields. It is even included on Summit Registers: Best Classic Bouldering Spots Around the US
As a newbie climber, I had no idea what I was getting into when I hopped on my first boulder route. Technique went out the window, and was replaced with the thought “I HAVE to make it to the top of this route, there is no way I am falling on my butt in front of this many people.” Since then I have become more comfortable climbing on real rocks, but I will admit I need to work on the falling part.
One of my favorite routes was this slab. (slideshow showed below) I was determined to complete it because it’s my style but mainly because there was a massive boulder a couple of feet behind me which didn’t really leave me any other option.
The trip was set in late February, and the weather was sensational. The perfect temperature for long days spent climbing and evenings cozying up around the fire. I didn’t know many people when I joined the Climbing Club, but that quickly changed. By the end of my first month, I had laughed till my belly ached, frozen my butt off, and shared a bag of wine with countless climbers I now call friends. Never have I felt more welcome by a chill, down to earth, group of people, and I’ve been hooked ever since.
Fun Fact: Just when I thought this trip couldn’t get better I also met my boyfriend this weekend. It would be a while before I admitted I liked him but the chemistry was obvious (but that story is for another day). We talked about traveling, climbing, and tacos for over an hour on this rock. (pictured below) So Rock Town will always be a special place to me.
